How to Deal with Public Speaking Fear

Help! You have to speak ahead of a crowd. Can this audience be hostile or bored? Can you forget what you would like to say? Dozens of negative thoughts race through your mind as you start getting ready for your speech.

THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM

Why are people afraid to speak in front of a group?

1. All eyes are on you and you’re center stage. It looks unnatural. It’s not a comfortable one-on-one speech wherever there are breaks within the dialogue.

2. The priority with what others think. Most of us are too involved with what others think about us. Instead of risk speaking in front of a group, we prefer to avoid placing ourselves in what think could be a vulnerable or scary scenario.

3. Fear of failure. We have a tendency to worry that we will forget what we wanted to say and that we are going to be humiliated and embarrassed and therefore “fail” after we present a speech.

We can conclude that the foundation of the problem begins and ends with you. What can you do regarding combating fear?

SECRETS TO OVERCOMING FEAR

A major way of overcoming fear is to simply accept that you are afraid.

“OK, I am terribly uncomfortable and afraid of giving a speech in front of a group.” (Acknowledge your feelings; do not try and avoid or deny them).

Next, believe that you just are capable of talking regarding what you’re going to say.

“Even though I am afraid, I do know what I’m talking about. I spent a lot of time writing my speech, considering it and practicing. I even did enough research.” (Research provides you with the confidence you need).

When you acknowledge that you simply are afraid, you’ll advise yourself, “I’m afraid, but I know I can do something to change my thoughts and deal with my worries.”

TIPS FOR BELIEVING THAT WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY IS VERY IMPORTANT

1. I agree that you are able to speak about what you will talk about. If you have prepared and practiced and if you’re sincere regarding your topic, the audience can probably listen to what you have to say.

2. Understand that you are the expert of your own material. You wrote your speech and nobody is going to know if you forgot to say something.

3. Believe that your audience will be interested in what you have to mention. Find ways in which to say things that will entertain and relax your audience. Be friendly and think of your speech as a conversation with a group of friends.

Confidence will increase after you select a topic you’re interested in and care about. Determine the aim of your speech and gather background info. Prepare your speech to the best of your ability and believe that your audience desires to hear what you have got to say.

A FEW EXERCISES TO GET YOU GOING

Although you will be ready and prepared to give your speech, you will expertise some stress right before you speak. The following exercises will help you relax.

1. Breathe. Do some deep breathing thirty seconds before you start speaking. Inhale and exhale 5 or six times. The increased supply of oxygen to the brain may be enough to provide you the courage to get started. You’ll silently try this before being introduced.

2. Think positively: “The audience wants to hear what I even have to say. No harm will come back to ME. They want ME to succeed. I know my material. I am ready. My mind is free and clear.”

RECOVERING AFTER AN “EMBARRASSING” OR “FAILED” SPEECH

After you have given your speech, you will have the thought, “Darn, I forgot to say a key purpose. I practiced this and left it out.” Or “I feel like a fool. I do not suppose my speech went well.” instead of fret about the things that went wrong, think about what you probably did well.

Rather than label yourself as a failure, tell yourself that

1. You have skills and abilities
2. You’ll work on improving
3. Greatness is something that’s achieved with practice over time.
